China has spent years issuing Chinese names for locations in Arunachal Pradesh. Now India has formally standardised 27 locations in the state on its own official map—and Beijing is complaining. Chinese state media has called the move “self-deception” and warned that it could hurt the “positive momentum” in India-China relations. The irony is difficult to miss. China began its latest naming campaign in 2017 and has repeatedly used maps and official nomenclature to reinforce its claim over Arunachal, which it calls “Zangnan”.
