How Are Countries Integrating Data Science, Computational Thinking and AI in K-12 Mathematics Education?

Join us to learn about the new workshop proceedings report launched by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. A panel of experts will discuss lessons learned from this international exchange. The panelists are Ken Ono, Commonwealth Professor of Mathematics at University of Virginia, and Eboney McKinney, Director of Mathematics and Educational Technology at Arizona Department of Education. This discussion will be moderated by Kate Knibbs, a Senior Writer at WIRED, and chaired by Padhu Seshaiyer, Professor and Director at George Mason University. Abstract: The integration of data science, computational thinking, and artificial intelligence into K-12 math education has become a global imperative. Yet, curriculum design approaches vary widely across international contexts, making cross-cultural study essential for educators and policy makers. As nations from Singapore to Finland and from Brazil to South Korea craft frameworks for an increasingly data-driven world, understanding how different systems structure learning progressions, sequence concepts within math standards, and design assessments is critical to building effective curricula. On February 23 and 24, 2026, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a workshop to learn how 17 countries in mathematics education are modernizing their curricula to incorporate data science, computational thinking, and AI. Math educators and leaders in the field with classroom, curriculum planning, teacher training, and policy experience explored a broad range of international practices, including different norms and expectations of what is good education. Bios: Kate Knibbs is a senior writer at WIRED. She covers prediction markets, the future of media, and how AI is changing the internet. She’s also interested in digital grey markets and regulatory battles over new tech. In the past, she was a staff writer at The Ringer, senior writer at Gizmodo (Gawker Media), and contributor for publications including The Onion (A.V. Club), The Daily Dot, and Time. She holds a bachelor's degree in English and political science from McGill University. She is based in Chicago. Eboney McKinney is the Director of Mathematics and Educational Technology for the Arizona Department of Education, Academic Standards Unit. She started out as a Mathematics Program Specialist for ADE in Exceptional Student Services. Before working for the state, she spent 11 years working in Southern Arizona, in the Sierra Vista Public School District, as a Student Achievement Teacher and as a Teacher Leader and education advocate. As a classroom teacher she taught 4th, 5th and 6th grade. She advocated for her students and colleagues as President of her local association and as the Region 12 Director for the AZ Education Association and as Southern- VP for the AZ Association of Teachers of Mathematics. Ken Ono wears many hats. He is the Commonwealth Professor of Mathematics at the University of Virginia (UVA) and the Founding Mathematician at Axiom Math. Despite his titles, Ono defies characterization. A true Renaissance man, he cannot be put in a box. When he is not making breakthroughs in number theory, he hosts the “Hoos in STEM” podcast, helps UVA’s swimmers win Olympic and world championship titles by tracking their performance, and produces films. Recently, Ono has been elected an Honorary Member of the Indian and Romanian Academies of Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Padhu Seshaiyer, Professor and Director at George Mason University (GMU) where he has served in multiple leadership positions including the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Director of the STEM Accelerator Program and Director of the Center for Outreach in Mathematics Professional Learning and Educational Technology. He is the past chair of the U.S. National Commission on Mathematics Instruction and has served in the Office of the Governor in several boards/committees. He has led the VDoE higher education taskforce for Data Science Standards and Implementation for Virginia and was an author on the 2024 NCTM Position Statement on Teaching Data Science in High School.
