The widespread encroachment on the active floodplain through the construction of houses, retaining walls, road embankments and commercial structures has been blamed for the devastating flashflood that struck Thunag village in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh in 2025, claiming 15 lives and leaving hundreds homeless.
