French President Emmanuel Macron has thrown his weight behind a dramatically deeper Canada-Europe relationship, publicly welcoming Prime Minister Mark Carney’s push for closer integration with the European Union. During their meeting in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, Macron backed the idea of Canada becoming the EU’s first-ever “associate member” and spoke of an “alliance of the future” spanning defence, energy, critical minerals, space, AI and trade.
