Iran has hit back at Canada over human rights, invoking the country's treatment of Indigenous children and the legacy of its residential-school system. The Iranian Foreign Ministry's statement came after Canada marked its National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30. Tehran argued that reconciliation could not be reduced to “a commemorative day or political rhetoric” and called for truth and accountability over the residential-school system and questions surrounding unmarked burial sites. The exchange comes just days after Canada announced fresh sanctions against five Iranian individuals and five entities over alleged human-rights violations. Tehran's latest statement turns Canada's criticism back on Ottawa, adding another flashpoint to already strained Canada-Iran relations.
