Football legend Lionel Messi and punk rock icon Patti Smith were among eight laureates honoured at the prestigious Princess of Asturias Awards in Oviedo, Spain, on October 23. Hosted by Spain’s Princess Leonor, the ceremony celebrated outstanding contributions across science, culture, technology and the humanities. Smith, widely known as the godmother of punk rock, surprised attendees by performing her song “Wing” a cappella after delivering her speech. Messi was recognised for his extraordinary football career, having amassed 48 titles and won 35 trophies with FC Barcelona before leaving the club in 2021. Each laureate received €50,000 and a sculpture designed by Catalan artist Joan Miró.
