Daniel Freeman made history in 1863 when he became the first person to file a claim under the Homestead Act, taking 160 acres of land in Nebraska. A year later, his life took a personal turn when he began exchanging letters with Agnes Suiter, who had once been engaged to his brother James, a Civil War casualty. Their correspondence slowly grew into a romance, and the two married in 1865. Agnes moved to Nebraska, where they raised eight children and built a life on the homestead.
