US President Donald Trump was set to welcome his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to Washington on Wednesday for a three-day visit where the superpowers’ tensions over trade, technology and Tehran will play out against a backdrop of pomp and ceremony. The Chinese leader left for Washington, his first trip to the US in nearly three years, on Wednesday. Trump was set to greet Xi and his wife on the tarmac at a Maryland military base in the evening.
