Pressemitteilung: From deployment to delivery: What comes next for zero emission buses? / The UK's transition to zero emission buses has reached a new phase. While recent years have focused on funding and initial fleet deployment, attention is now shifting towards a different challenge, how to operate zero emission buses successfully at scale. That was the focus of Steer's second Top Deck Views event, which brought together experts from across the bus, energy and technology sectors to explore the operational realities of decarbonisation and the future role of automated buses. The operational challenge Steer’s bus market lead, Phil Turner, kicked off by explaining the next phase of the transition is not just about buying buses, it's about operating them successfully at scale. As fleets grow, operators and authorities are increasingly focused on affordability, reliability and long-term performance. Panellists discussed the importance of getting early decisions right, from depot design and grid connections to charger specification and software integration. These choices can significantly influence whole-life costs and operational resilience. Significant improvements in battery technology were highlighted as a success story. Early concerns around battery life and replacement risk have reduced significantly as vehicles have proven themselves in operation and technology has matured. The question now isn’t around reliability and battery life; it is more around selecting the appropriate battery size for your service requirements. Bigger isn’t always better. (....)
