Pressemitteilung: Integrated ticketing: How can the EU improve cross-border rail journeys for passengers? / What will it take to make booking international rail travel as simple as a single journey? This article explores the EU's latest proposals for integrated ticketing, the remaining barriers, and the lessons that can help deliver a more connected rail network. Earlier this year the European Commission put forward proposals to improve cross-border rail journey bookings across the EU. The Passenger Package contains measures aimed to enable single-ticket bookings across multiple rail operators and make the rail market more transparent and accessible, with passengers able to find, compare and purchase an end-to-end service, combined from different rail operators, into one single ticket on a single ticketing platform. Cross-border rail travel received renewed attention following fossil fuel crises triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the war in Iran, as well as existing climate targets to double high-speed rail travel by 2030 and triple it by 2050 to meet climate goals. What is the existing framework for EU Rail travel? There is significant EU-wide legislation to support the technical integration of transnational rail networks including the Single European Railway Area (SERA) Directive, the Interoperability of the Rail System Directive and European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) legislation and deployment framework.
