THE Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines marked the 40th Anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution of 1986 by releasing a pastoral letter titled “That Christ may be formed in us” — drawing from Paul’s letter to the Galatians. In that letter, signed by Archbishop Gilbert Garcera of the Archdiocese of Lipa and current president of the CBCP, the bishops lamented what they identified as the five wounds of the nation — five K’s: Korapsyon, Kahirapan, Kriminalidad, Kasinungalingan and Kataksilan. They proposed a national program which they introduced as “Katipunan Formation Program for Good Citizenship.” Anyone who declares “Katipunan aka” also affirms love of God and country, a sense of responsibility for the common good, and a commitment to live one’s faith in daily social and political life. This Katipunan — that calls attention to “ripon” — gathering — commits the Catholic and, in fact, the Filipino to five priorities: Panalangin (Prayer), Pagtutol (Taking a stand), Panagutin (Holding someone accountable), Pagtabas (Pruning), and Pag-asa (Hope).
