Kim Jong Un has made a surprise trip to the Chinese border city of Dandong as Donald Trump signals interest in reopening direct negotiations with the North Korean leader. Kim crossed the newly opened New Yalu River Bridge and visited China’s memorial commemorating its intervention against US-led forces during the Korean War. According to the supplied reporting, Kim repeatedly emphasised the historic relationship between Beijing and Pyongyang, saying North Korea would remember China’s assistance at “the cost of their blood.” The timing puts attention on Kim’s potential leverage ahead of APEC and any future talks with Trump. China remains North Korea’s largest trading partner and crucial economic relationship, while the newly opened bridge offers a visible symbol of strengthening cross-border links. Xi Jinping did not meet Kim during the one-day visit. But with Trump again discussing negotiations, Kim’s journey underscores that Pyongyang has another powerful relationship to cultivate before returning to any table with Washington.
