The National Portrait Gallery’s highly anticipated Marilyn exhibition – in celebration of what would have been her 100th birthday – is full of striking, evocative magic. But when it comes to one of history’s most photographed and most misunderstood women, it leaves us with more questions than answers, writes Adam White
