For the best results, split the barley straw bale into smaller 4 to 8 ounce clumps and space them along the water's perimeter. Apply about 4 ounces of barley straw per 1,000 gallons of water. Reapply the barley straw every 4 to 6 months. Putting the barley straw in a mesh bag is helpful before placing it in the water. Eight bales can treat up to 1/4 acre for 6 months.
