Donald Trump has inserted himself into France’s unrest, claiming “the migrants have taken over France” and urging the country to “CLOSE THE BORDERS, FAST!” Trump’s intervention comes as France faces nationwide demonstrations involving students, unions, farmers and other groups, driven by grievances including education, living costs and public services. The current unrest therefore has broader origins than immigration alone. But Trump is using the images of burning barricades, looting and clashes to reinforce his argument that European governments have failed to control migration. The US president made a similar argument after mass crossings into Spain’s Ceuta enclave, describing those scenes as an “invasion” and warning Americans that similar events could occur in the United States. Macron has advocated stronger EU external borders, faster returns and collective European migration controls. Trump’s message is more direct: he is presenting France’s turmoil as another warning about borders as America approaches the midterms.
