The Pentagon is investigating whether mysterious refrigeration failures at US military commissaries were deliberate cyber sabotage after freezers at multiple bases malfunctioned in an unusual way. Officials familiar with the investigation told Reuters that at least six commissaries were affected. At Fort Huachuca in Arizona, a freezer reportedly switched into defrost mode overnight and began heating the food inside. US Cyber Command and the Army Criminal Investigation Division’s Cyber Field Office are now involved. Investigators are also comparing the incidents with a similar cyberattack in France, where hackers manipulated temperature controls at more than 350 establishments, causing refrigeration systems to warm and products to spoil. No perpetrator has been publicly identified. The Pentagon has not attributed the US incidents to Iran or established that the American and French cases are connected. But investigators are examining whether someone exploited internet-connected refrigeration controls to disrupt facilities without penetrating classified military networks.
