Fabric roll of 40 2.5-inch by 44-inch (width of fabric) strips from the Covered Bridges in Winter collection by designer Tara Reed for Riley Blake Designs. While covered bridges aren’t specifically mentioned, the 1844 poem turned song “Over the river and through the wood, to grandfather’s house we go always comes to mind when I think of covered bridges in winter. I’ve always loved covered bridges but after a springtime weekend adventure with my husband, I learned some interesting facts that made me love them even more. Most of America’s covered bridges were built between 1825 and 1875. The bridges weren’t covered to protect travelers but to protect the bridge’s wood from snow and rain, preventing decay and rot. Covered bridges are icons of days gone by and pioneer life. They were often at the heart of the community, giving shelter for concerts, picnics and political rallies. They were also a place for people to post notices and messages that would be protected from the rain and seen as people traveled in the area.
