For decades, India has tracked factory, mining, and electricity output every month through the Index of Industrial Production, even though services account for more than half of the economy. That gap has finally begun to close. The government has released monthly production indices for 19 service industries, using GST returns and regulatory data to estimate changes in real output. This could transform GDP forecasting, monetary-policy analysis, and investment research. But it is still only a trial series.
