Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has urged BRICS to construct resilient economic systems capable of protecting its members and the wider Global South from sanctions, military pressure and disruptions to legitimate trade. Speaking at the BRICS gathering in New Delhi, Pezeshkian said recent American and Israeli military action against Iran demonstrated that economic security cannot be separated from national or regional security. He warned that pressure on a country’s trade, energy infrastructure and financial system can spread across borders and destabilise the global economy. Pezeshkian called on BRICS to reduce dependence on monopolised financial and technological instruments that can be used to obstruct another country’s commerce.
