Spain has demanded that Italy remove temporary checks on travellers arriving from Spanish territory by Sunday, warning that it will otherwise adopt “proportionate measures.” Madrid calls the restrictions discriminatory and argues that migrants who entered Ceuta did not receive unrestricted access to mainland Spain or the wider Schengen area. Giorgia Meloni’s government maintains that the unprecedented influx justifies safeguards against onward movement.
