Iran claims it has seized an American MQM-170 spy drone intact over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, in a potential electronic warfare coup. According to Iran’s IRGC Navy, its electronic warfare unit took control of the drone’s guidance systems and brought it down intact in western Hormuz. Tehran claims the drone was on a mission to identify Iranian air defence positions and says data showed it had taken off from a southern Persian Gulf state. The claim comes amid escalating tensions between Iran and the United States over the strategic waterway. Has Iran gained a crucial advantage in the electronic warfare battle? The reported capture has raised fresh questions about US surveillance operations in the region. The claims have not been independently verified.
