Rethinking Researcher Assessment and Incentives at U.S. Academic Institutions

While current assessments of researcher output and productivity at U.S. academic institutions capture important dimensions of scholarly activity, many evaluation rubrics rely heavily on traditional indicators of success, such as grant funding, publication counts, and citation metrics. The National Academies held a public workshop to explore opportunities to broaden researcher assessment and incentives within U.S. academic institutions. Speakers and participants discussed institutional case studies, emerging approaches, and practical strategies for recognizing and incentivizing contributions beyond traditional research outputs. Discussions emphasized the need to distinguish between baseline responsibilities - such as research integrity and transparency - and contributions that may warrant additional recognition. Additionally, participants highlighted the importance of aligning institutional policies with departmental practices, creating shared language around what institutions value, and supporting early- and mid-career researchers. This Proceedings of a Workshop-in Brief highlights the presentations and discussions that occurred during the workshop.
