THE recent tripartite defence agreement between Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkiye is being termed by many in the West as an Islamic NATO. The Mecca Agreement, known by the city where the deal was signed on August 7, 2026 by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, sets up a collective defence framework in which an attack on any one of the three states would be considered an attack on all three, similar to NATOs (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) Cold War era doctrine.
