The Road Transport Ministry is planning a major overhaul of quality checks on highway and expressway projects amid concerns over construction deficiencies and premature failures. Engineers India Limited, or EIL, is expected to be appointed as the third-party inspection agency for around 5,000 kilometres of priority road projects for an initial period of three years. EIL will inspect expressways, six-lane, four-lane and two-lane National Highways at different stages of construction. The agency will make five inspection visits per stretch and submit reports with recommendations for corrective action. The government will bear the cost of the inspection exercise.
