Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and US President Donald Trump held bilateral talks in New York on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly. During a press briefing, Takaichi indicated that she wanted to discuss several agenda items privately and suggested that reporters leave the room. Trump then turned to the press and said, “Well, you heard her.” The leaders discussed strengthening Japan-US ties, economic security cooperation and alliance coordination. Key areas included artificial intelligence, semiconductors and critical minerals. Japan’s Foreign Ministry said the roughly 35-minute meeting covered cooperation on economic security, the economy and defence. Takaichi had also highlighted supply-chain resilience, cooperation with the Global South and technology-related challenges as priorities for the trip.
