Pressemitteilung: Road freight transport increased in 2025 / In 2025, 13.29 billion tonnes of goods were transported by road in the EU, an increase of 1.8% compared with 2024. In terms of weight, the largest product group transported was ‘metal ores, mining and quarrying products’, accounting for 3.04 billion tonnes, or 22.9% of the EU total. This was followed by ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ (1.61 billion tonnes; 12.1%), and ‘other non-metallic mineral products’ (1.60 billion tonnes; 12.1%). In relation to road freight transport performance, measured in tonne-kilometres (tkm), the leading category of goods was ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’, accounting for 311.1 billion tkm (16.6% of the EU total). This was followed by ‘grouped goods: a mixture of types of goods transported together’ (237.1 billion tkm; 12.6%) and ‘agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing products’ (206.3 billion tkm; 11.0%). Transport of dangerous goods: 4.0% of all road freight transport In 2025, dangerous goods accounted for 4.0% of all road freight transport, measured in tonne-kilometres.
