Paleobiotechnology: science in its social context - Leibniz-HKI

The Department of Palaeobiotechnology (Leibniz-HKI) and Microbiome Sciences group (Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology) are happy to invite you to the 3rd event of the ‘Werner Siemens Palaeobiotechnology Kolloquium’. Scientific advances are opening up dramatic new opportunities for understanding the structure and complex functions of ancient microbes. Over the past five years, de novo assembly has allowed the reconstruction of thousands of ancient microbial genomes, providing new opportunities to explore the complex relationships between ourselves and the microbes inhabiting our bodies, our foods, and our environments. Such efforts force us to reconsider the human past in light of the material turn, pushing the boundaries of microbiology and reimagining the frontiers of archaeology as we confront our hologenomic selves. This colloquium brings together diverse experts in ancient biomolecules, metagenomics, and the histories of science and medicine to explore and imagine the future of microbial paleogenomics research and the emerging field of paleobiotechnology. Keywords: natural products, evolution, metagenomics, ancient DNA, hologenomics, domestication, food genomics, nutrition, medicine,  societal development, human-animal interactions, material development We will have 3 speakers giving short lectures and a question round on the topic ‘Paleobiotechnology: science in its social context ’ and then a social coffee break to allow free discussions with the speakers in an informal setting. In this event, we will have the opportunity to hear from: Lisa Haushofer (University of Amsterdam, NL), Lisa Onaga (MPI of History of Science, DE; Max-Planck-NTU Singapore Centre for Biocultural Worlding, DE/SG), Tom Gilbert (University of Copenhagen, DK) Please note: If you would like to join the informal coffee and cake meet and greet with the speakers, please use this form to allow us to gauge attendance numbers. No registration is required for the public lecture, which will run on a first come, first served basis. For further information, please contact Annett Fischer (annett.fischer@leibniz-hki.de) James Fellows Yates (james.fellows-yates@leibniz-hki.de)
