Advancing Sustainability for a Resource-Constrained World

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene a session, Advancing Sustainability for a Resource-Constrained World during the National Sustainability Society’s Third Annual Conference on August 19, 2026 at Colorado State University in Denver, Colorado. Since the National Academies 1999 report “Our Common Journey: A Transition Toward Sustainability,” the sustainability landscape has changed profoundly. Climate and biodiversity risks, geopolitical instability, rapid technological change, artificial intelligence, infrastructure stress, contested information environments, and growing pressures on water, energy, land, food, minerals, and public institutions are reshaping what sustainability leadership requires. Diagnosis and recommended actions abound, but the persistent challenge is how sustainability science could support implementation in real places. This session will explore an emerging early-stage National Academies scoping effort that is beginning to explore whether and how Our Common Journey should be revisited, reassessed, or built upon for the next decade. The conversation will address resource governance as a recurring operational challenge: how communities and institutions allocate, renew, finance, and steward limited natural, technological, financial, institutional, and human resources while sustaining ecological integrity, human well-being, resilience, legitimacy, and future opportunity. Examples may include AI and digital infrastructure, water and energy systems, rural and urban sustainability, information integrity, equity, and decision support across interwoven scales.Agenda, August 19, 2026, 1:00-2:15 pm MDT Moderators: Franklin Carrero-Martínez and Emi Kameyama (National Academies) Panelists: William Clark (NAS, Harvard University), Marilu Hastings (The Meridian House), and Adam Douglas Henry (University of Arizona)
