The rapidly growing stray dog population in the Palampur region has emerged as a major public safety concern. The health authorities have recorded more than 50 dog bite cases in Palampur and Baijnath subdivisions of Kangra district every month. Local residents have expressed concern over the worsening situation. They allege that despite repeated assurances from the civic authorities, efforts to control the stray dog population have yielded little visible progress. Packs of stray dogs can be seen roaming in markets, at bus stands, railway stations, on hospital premises, educational institutions and residential colonies in Palampur, Baijnath and Paprola. The increasing number of stray dogs has created a sense of fear among pedestrians, schoolchildren, elderly people and motorists. Several incidents of stray dogs chasing and attacking people have been reported in recent months, prompting residents to urge the authorities to intervene immediately.
