I saw and enjoyed the movie Digger a few days ago, and while looking for commentary online I’ve found a deluge of verdicts from people who haven’t seen the movie. There must be thousands and thousands of these hot takes based on total conjecture. By my measure, there’s more opining from people who haven’t seen the film than from those who have. And it gets worse. These comments betray total ignorance of what actually happens in the film (which is surprisingly nuanced and open to various interpretations), and are delivered with a smug attitude of superiority—because these amateur critics have already figured everything out from the trailer. Have we really reached this level of stupid as a culture? I don’t expect everybody to act with the knowledge and standards of a professional critic. But what kind of fool offers a verdict on a film without seeing it? P.S.: If you haven’t seen Digger, I encourage you to do while it’s still at the theaters. It’s great cinema and ought to be experienced on a large screen.
