The suspect in the deadly attack near Berlin’s Pride celebrations has been shot dead during a police operation in the city’s Spandau district. Authorities say 21-year-old Abdul Ballout was found inside a garden shed and charged officers with a bladed weapon as they attempted to arrest him. Police opened fire, and he died at the scene despite resuscitation efforts. Ballout was suspected of driving a rented van into a crowd near the Christopher Street Day event before attacking people with a machete, killing one woman and injuring 29 others. Germany’s interior minister says investigators believe the assault was an Islamist terrorist attack. German media report that Ballout was known as a radicalised extremist, had previously attempted to join Islamic State and had received a suspended sentence for preparing serious violence.
