The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. Student assistant in Environmental Data Science (f/d/m/x)

Background
The AWI section Polar Terrestrial Environmental Systems investigates present and past terrestrial ecosystems. A key part of this work is the use of paleo-proxy data to reconstruct past landscapes at large spatial scales, helping us better understand past climate-vegetation interactions and future environmental change.
Your Tasks
You will support the application of a pollen-based land-cover reconstruction method to the Northern Hemisphere. The method already exists and will be expanded to a larger geographic area. Your tasks will include:

• Preparing and managing large paleoecological and spatial datasets
• Working with existing workflows and adapting code in R and/or Python
• Using shell/Linux environments where needed
• Documenting workflows and results clearly
• Communicating progress, questions, and challenges with the project team

Your Profile

• Enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s programme in Information Science, Biosciences, Geosciences, Bioinformatics, or a related field
• Interested in paleoecology and climate-vegetation interactions
• Experience with R and/or Python, including writing and understanding code
• Comfortable with shell/Linux environments or willing to learn
• General IT competence and enjoyment of working with large datasets
• Fluent in English
• Available to work on site at AWI Potsdam, Telegrafenberg

Further Information
Initial duration: 3 months, with the possibility of extension
Preferred start date: Mid-August
Work time: 40 hours per month
