In November 1924, Rabindranath Tagore lay confined to bed at the Plaza Hotel in Buenos Aires, a city of grand boulevards, neoclassical architecture, and historic cafes in Argentina. Bound for Lima in Peru, the 63-year-old Nobel laureate — already one of the most celebrated literary voices — had been forced to cut short his journey due to illness, stranded in a South American city he had never intended to visit.
