A Pentagon-supported 60 Minutes interview is facing scrutiny after an American F-15E weapons-systems officer was shown with his face unobscured despite being identified only by the pseudonym “Bravo” for security reasons. The officer described surviving almost two days behind Iranian lines following the loss of his aircraft. Online investigators subsequently claimed they had matched his face to publicly available US military photographs and biographical information. The controversy is not that the individual’s military career was entirely secret. The concern is that the broadcast may have connected an existing public identity to a protected combat role, aircraft loss and sensitive rescue operation inside Iran. The programme blurred footage of the special-operations helicopter used in the extraction but openly displayed the rescued airman’s face—raising questions for both CBS and the Pentagon about what protection the pseudonym actually provided.
