Something very interesting happened in New York last week. Twenty five mayors and senior city leaders from 34 cities in G20 countries closed the 2026 Urban 20 (U20) Mayors Summit with a communique built on three demands: secure and affordable housing, a just energy transition with real urban resilience, and protection for immigrant and displaced communities. This is indeed very credible. The cities being talked about serve more than 500 million people and produce over a third of global GDP. Mayor Zohran Mamdani set the tone, warning that a city priced and heated beyond limits turns into a museum. Romes mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, went further and called affordable housing a human right, not a financial asset.
