Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has hit back at Israel’s growing portrayal of Türkiye as a regional security threat, calling it a “misguided narrative” linked to Israel’s domestic politics and electoral climate. Erdogan said Ankara has serious differences with the Israeli government but stressed that Türkiye has “no hostility toward the Israeli people.” He also rejected the idea that Ankara’s relationship with Washington is shaped by Israel, saying Türkiye deals directly with US President Donald Trump. The dispute comes as tensions between Ankara and Jerusalem increasingly extend beyond Gaza, with Türkiye and Israel also taking sharply different positions over Syria and the wider regional balance of power. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused Erdogan of being complicit in efforts seeking Israel’s destruction, while Ankara says its opposition is directed at Israeli government policies rather than the Israeli people. With Türkiye remaining a NATO member and major regional power, and Israel a key US partner, the growing rivalry is creating another significant fault line in the Middle East.
