The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, the nation’s oldest natural history museum, is preparing to close its doors to the public after nearly two centuries in Philadelphia. The museum, known for its dinosaur skeletons, fossils, meteorites, plant specimens and wildlife dioramas, has struggled to rebuild attendance since the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, rising operating costs have placed additional pressure on the institution. Drexel University says the closure will allow resources to be redirected toward the Academy’s research and collections.
