There is something wonderfully appropriate about the fact that a book on khayal gayaki should itself unfold with something of the expansiveness and associative movement of the form. Primila Puri’s account of her long association with Ustad Munawwar Ali Khan of the Kasur-Patiala gharana is not a strictly linear narrative. It pauses, digresses, returns and elaborates, moving between people, music and experiences. Yet these apparent departures gradually reveal themselves as part of a larger composition.
