Polish president Karol Nawrocki has stoked a major row over his slur at Russia amid the Ukraine conflict. While marking the first anniversary of his inauguration, Nawrocki in his speech emphasised a "Poland First" agenda and reaffirmed support for Ukraine's defense against Russia. During his address, Nawrocki used the term "Moscal" to refer to Russians—a historical Slavic term meaning "Muscovite" that is widely regarded today in parts of Eastern Europe as an ethnic slur. His remarks have drawn attention for their strong rhetoric and nationalist tone. Nawrocki argued that it was in Poland's strategic interest for Ukraine to resist Russian forces while also insisting that Polish national interests must remain the government's top priority.
