An old clip of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani praising Abdul El-Sayed has resurfaced after the progressive Democrat's historic victory in Michigan's 2026 US Senate election. Speaking at an August 5 press conference, Mamdani rejected comparisons calling El-Sayed a "mini Mamdani" and praised his focus on healthcare, affordability and working-class Americans. Asked whether El-Sayed represented the future of the Democratic Party, Mamdani responded with an emphatic "Yes. Yes." Months later, El-Sayed defeated Trump-backed Republican Mike Rogers, becoming the first Muslim elected to the US Senate. Is the so-called "Mamdani effect" signalling a broader shift in Democratic politics?
