An unfinished, custom-built observatory in Chile has unexpectedly solved one of puzzles astrophysics struggled with by directly capturing dense clouds of gas expelled by a dying star blending back into the Milky Way galaxy. As detailed in a study published in the journal Nature, the breakthrough demonstrates the exact physical mechanism through which foundational elements like carbon and oxygen, which are created deep within stellar cores, are recycled to serve as the building blocks for future stellar nurseries, planetary bodies and living organisms.
