U.S. Vice President JD Vance and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani came face to face at the National September 11 Memorial during the ceremony marking 25 years since the attacks. No substantive conversation between the two men was immediately reported. But their presence produced a striking political image. Vance is a potential Republican presidential contender and possible successor to Donald Trump, while Mamdani has become one of the most prominent figures on America’s progressive left. Mamdani also shook hands with former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, who had publicly suggested that the city’s first Muslim mayor should stay away from the commemoration. At Ground Zero, however, political rivalry temporarily gave way to remembrance as victims’ names were read and families marked a quarter-century since nearly 3,000 people were killed.
